Ron Young – Chairman of the Board
Ron Young joins our board with a lifetime of experience in both business and sailing. In his business life Ron has worked primarily in marketing, sales and advertising, supporting such well-known brands as Proctor & Gamble, Levi's, Bank of California, Clorox and C&H Sugar. He has been a board member or senior executive at more than half a dozen companies, including Electronic Arts, Sage Communications and West Marine. In his sailing life Ron has been active since his early teens. He has competed in more than 3,000 sailing races on four continents, has been involved in six America's Cup campaigns, and was the chief fundraiser in the 1985 Golden Gate Challenge America's Cup campaign.
James Hancock – President & Founder
Jim Hancock holds a master’s degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from MIT, together with a concentration in Economics and Entrepreneurship fulfilled at MIT’s Sloan School. His career experience spans early work as a Marine Engineer in the Oil Industry, to commercial software development in the Windows Utilities market, and later as the general manager and school director of one of the west coast’s largest sailing schools. Twice in his working life Jim has started and successfully run his own businesses as a sole proprietor, first in the 1980s as a computer consultant, and more recently as a 100-ton captain serving clients in the Bay Area. Starting in late 1999, Jim cruised his 39-foot sailboat from California, through Mexico and the South Pacific to Australia.
Meagan Strout – Secretary
Meagan Strout is a Florida native with a passion for things maritime. The daughter of a sailor, Meagan grew up on her father’s research vessels and lived for a short time on a U.S. Naval base on Andros Island, Bahamas. Meagan moved to the Bay Area in March of 2016 to begin a career as a recruiter after providing over 10 years of service in luxury hotel management with Four Seasons, The Ritz-Carlton and The Breakers. She has operational experience that includes recruiting, on-boarding and training highly efficient teams. She has administrative experience managing executive priorities, tracking projects and deadlines, handling written and verbal correspondence, and organizing and documenting important data.
Travis Lund – Treasurer
Travis Lund is the Executive Director of the non-profit Treasure Island Sailing Center, San Francisco’s only community sailing center. Travis is a lifelong sailor who grew up on the shores of Lake Huron, spending much of his youth sailing and racing around the Great Lakes. He studied English at Michigan State University while he sailed for their sailing team. After several years pursuing more traditional occupations, Travis moved to Bay Area to work as a full-time sailing instructor for J/World Sailing School in 2006. Following that position, Travis went out on his own to teach and coach privately, pioneering a coaching platform that combined traditional coaching with multi-camera video support. When TUI Marine (Sunsail/Moorings) opened their San Francisco base in 2012 Travis lead the operation as their first general manager. Travis stayed with TUI until taking the helm at the Treasure Island Sailing Center in 2014.
Jeffery Owens – Director
Jeff Owens is a professional fundraiser and is the Salvation Army's West Coast Territorial Direct Marketing Director. He describes himself as a passionate organizational capacity building champion. He has consulted for over 25 years with leading international, national and local organizations to implement long-term sustainable development programs in socially responsible program areas (Education, Social Service, Arts/Culture/Humanities, Health/Science, Environment, Emergency Relief, Civil Society and Human Rights).
Carolyn Davidson – Director
Carolyn Davidson is a Bay Area native and a dynamic, driven real estate professional. She holds a business degree from Diablo Valley College and has proven her ability to manage projects, timelines, personalities and details through her 30 years of experience in real estate financing and sales. With 16 of those years as a Relocation Specialist and Luxury Home Specialist for Coldwell Banker, she was in the International President's Circle and was in the top 8% of agents worldwide. She has a passion for education that started at a young age volunteering with her mother who was teaching a special education program. In both education and sales her focus has been on understanding the different ways in which people assimilate and process information. She has volunteered to help with her local school's fundraising and PTA.
Kira Hammond – Director
Kira Hammond's background is in STEAM* education. She holds an MA in Film and Media Studies from Johns Hopkins University, and with a background in both engineering and art she is able to bridge the gap between technology and art. She says she has a passion for creating compelling media to inform and inspire. Kira has worked for museums, scientific institutions, higher education, advertising, and the private sector, most recently completing a 9-year tenure as a staff member of the California Academy of Sciences.
