Abundance
Stephen Covey first spoke of the Abundance Mentality (or Mindset) in his 1989 classic, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. At the surface it seems like little more than asking whether the glass is half full or half empty, but it turns out that the mindset you CHOOSE changes EVERYTHING. It's not that one is true and the other is false, but that the mindset you adopt determines your entire approach to life, and that makes a big difference.
When we choose a scarcity mindset we see the world as not having enough. Not enough time, not enough money, not enough energy, not enough resources, not enough love. This throws us into the mode of conserving and protecting, of greed, stinginess, and fear that we will lose what little we have. By living our lives from this mindset we put those things forward and they are returned to us, as stinginess is repaid with stinginess, fear is repaid with fear and so forth.
When we choose an abundance mindset just the opposite occurs. We have abundant time, abundant money, abundant energy, abundant resources and abundant love. We begin to ask what we can do with all the gifts that we’ve received and we experience gratitude and creativity. Our abundance encourages us to be generous, which is repaid with generosity, we give love which is returned with more love, and we experience calmness, confidence and courage that attracts people to us. In fact, people who adopt an abundance mindset actually DO receive more of these things, which creates a virtuous cycle that compounds over time.
At the Sailing Science Center we believe in abundance, that we are gifted and blessed and that we can share those blessings with others to create value for our community. It’s a choice we all can make.
